Websites 101 – What is a web host?

When I’m talking with customers about a new website one of the things I talk about is website hosting. A web host is a company that provides server space for the files that make up your website. The servers (also known as really big computers) are attached to the Internet. When I work on websites I make changes to the files on my computer and move the files to the web host.

I always help find the perfect web host for each customer’s site. 99% of the time the company that I recommend is HostMySite.com. They have the three things that I look for in a good web host.

1. Their servers work. If a server goes down your site goes down. The servers at HostMySite stay up. You might think, “Why is this a big deal? After all this is what they’re paid for.” I could tell you horror stories about this! Want to see my blood pressure rise? Show me a server that’s down. I’m usually a calm person but I have ZERO tolerance for non-working servers. I host several of my personal sites at HostMySite and I’m delighted with the service I get.

2. The have fantastic customer support. Their staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They can impart knowledge while speaking English or techie talk. They’re also there 24/7.

3. The plans are reasonably priced.  I’m fanatical about points one and two.  HostMySite.com meets those requirements and is economical to boot. As of this writing the starter Linux plan is $8.95 a month if you pay for a year at a time. What’s a starter Linux plan? I won’t bore you with the long answer. The short answer is that it’s the plan that I recommend most of my customers. It’s also the plan that I use for my sites hosted at HostMySite.
