Technorati

Technorati is a search engine for blogs. That means it spiders (or searches) blogs. If you visit Technorati and put in a search term the response list will be made up of blogs. You get the idea.

Technorati Authority Score
Technorati has a few special terms and features. One of them is the Technorati Authority Score. It’s the number of blogs that have linked to you in the last six months. Your score will rise and fall as new links are added and old links drop off. Also, it’s important to know that Technorati only gives one point per blog. So if a blog links to you six times in one month that will only add one point to your score.

Technorati Rank
The blog with the highest Technorati Authority score has a Technorati Rank of 1. That’s the best possible rank. At the time of this writing Engadget has a Technorati Rank of 1. The rank of other blogs is based on how far away they are from the top spot. You’ll want to keep in mind that since there will be many blogs wit the same Technorati Authority Score that many blogs will have the same rank.

For example, this blog has an authority score of 2. The rank for this blog (and all the other blogs with an authority of 2) is 2,515,283. This means that there are 2,515,283 blogs scoring in between mine and engadget.com. It’s a good thing I’ve always like to have room to grow. :-)

Oh, I get it. I didn’t know the links only stayed on for 6 months.

Although, I have to say, that my own blog has been alive for only six months and quite a while back links were already starting to drop off. I didn’t know why but then there are lots of things I don’t know.

Also it’s quite annoying that one’s ranking can actually go down.

Which brings me to this question: Why do we care about Technorati?

Very interesting question! See the 09/17 post.
