Moving a WordPress Site
I had an interesting email from one of my clients last week. He used the word “bombshell” in the subject line. His website host was going out of business because of the bad economy. He had a week to find a new host and move his site. It was a bombshell indeed!
The client has a modified WordPress blog. What this means is that the client has a WordPress site that looks like a “regular” website. There are no comments and the client uses all pages and no posts. The client maintains it himself using WordPress. (By the way if you’re interested in this sort of service feel free to contact me.) I’d never moved a WordPress site but it looked as though I was in for a learning experience!
As a first step I had the client get a new hosting account with HostMySite. I installed WordPress on the new host. Then I copied over the client’s custom template.
The next step was to move the website content. For that I utilized the export feature of WordPress. (It’s in the tools area of 2.7.) The export feature created a file containing copies of all my client’s pages. Then I used the import feature to move the pages into the new version of WordPress on HostMySite. It worked like a charm. I made a few tweaks to the WordPress settings and I was set.
As a last step I logged into the customer’s GoDaddy account and changed the DNS settings for the domain name. The new website should be live within 24 hours.
The bombshell situation ended up being not that big of a deal. We’re going to beat the old host’s deadline with a few days to spare. And now I’ve moved a WordPress site!
