HostMySite and Hosting.com
I use HostMySite as a website host and I recommend them to many of my customers. HostMySite sent out an email to its cusomers this week. The email says that HostMySite has acquired Hosting.com. The email goes on to list numerous benefits of this acquisition. The list of benefits is filled with technical lingo. I called HostMySite’s technical support group to get a better understanding of potential benefits.
Opportunities for managed colocation in four geographically dispersed datacenters. – Most, if not all of you, have a shared hosting account. That means that your website or blog files are on a server along with the files of other HostMySite customers.
When a website becomes VERY popular it needs more space. In fact, it needs so much space that it takes up a whole server. “Managed colocation in four geographically dispersed datacenters” means that for these really popular websites HostMySite will now be able to offer a service wherein the website/blog files will be on several servers throughout the country. If there’s a power failure in one area, not to worry. The other datacenters will pick up the slack.
This is a great service. When I was a website developer for a large corporation we had a similar setup. No matter what was going on our website was up and running.
Development of high-availability and BCDR solutions across datacenters. BCDR stands for Business Continuity and Data Recovery. Having the files for your very large website stored in different datacenters is an example of BCDR. Your website stays up and you don’t lose data.
Expert 24x7x365 technical support with specialized Entourage teams in both Newark, DE and Louisville, KY. Since HostMySite is growing there will be an increased number of people to help when customers call and ask for help. If there’s a blizzard in Delaware the Kentucky folks will be able to take care of things. If there’s a power failure in Kentucky then the reverse will happen. So as customers of HostMySite we’ll be taken care of no matter what happen s.
What’s an Entourage Team? Those are for the very large websites with the dedicated servers. A standing team of people will be assigned to the same 300 or so servers. Those customers will benefit from the continuity of dealing with the same group of people every time they call in.
Seamless commitment to process backed-up by SAS-70 Type II. It turns out that “SAS-70 Type II” is a standard developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Here’s more about what that means for us from HostMySite’s website:
What this means for HostMySite.com (service organization)
As a service organization, HostMySite.com can issue a copy of the SAS 70 Type II audit report to user organizations to verify our processes and procedures (controls) are adequate for their dedicated and/or colocation hosting needs.Ongoing SAS 70 Type II audits ensure HostMySite.com is keeping their policies and procedures up to date as technology and business needs change. As these audits are performed by independent auditors, this ensures HostMySite.com is continuing to create and implement proper controls.
What this means for our web hosting customers (user organizations)
As a user organization, potential as well as existing customers can request a copy of the SAS 70 Type II audit report to ensure HostMySite has proper controls in place. Customers will no longer need to perform their own audits. As these audits are performed by independent auditors, any potential bias is removed from the reports.
So after translating all the technical lingo here’s the scoop – HostMySite is growing. If you have a huge website with a dedicated server it looks like some cool new services are available. However we should all benefit by having two groups of technical service folks in two geographic locations.
